How we rate evidence

Not every study is equally strong. Each post gets a five-step meter based on the type of study, not on how exciting the result is. How we work

  1. Opinion or anecdote

Expert opinion, anecdote or a single case: it can raise a question, but proves nothing.

  2. Cells or animals

Studies in cells or animals: useful to understand how, but results may not hold in people.

  3. Observational studies

Observational studies that follow people: they show a link, not that one thing causes the other.

  4. Clinical trial

A randomized clinical trial: it compares groups of people, and comes close to showing cause.

  5. Review of clinical trials

A systematic review of several clinical trials: the strongest evidence science can offer.
